North London’s Wolf Alice kicked off their tour in spectacular fashion with a sold-out show at Belfast’s Mandela Hall. Already riding a wave of critical acclaim, the band was named one of Billboard Magazine’s Artists to Watch in 2015 and featured in Rolling Stone’s 10 New Artists You Need to Know (October 2015).
Their momentum has only continued to build. Wolf Alice were shortlisted for the prestigious 2015 Mercury Prize, earned a 2016 BRIT Award nomination for British Breakthrough Act, and received a 2016 GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance for “Moaning Lisa Smile.” With a return to the U.S. scheduled at the end of their UK tour this winter, there appears to be no slowing down this electrifying four-piece.
Supported by Spies, Wolf Alice delivered a stunning set to a packed Belfast crowd. Their live sound is exceptional, with the individual talents of Ellie Rowsell, Joel Amey, Joff Oddie, and Theo Ellis shining through. Multi-layered guitars and hauntingly powerful vocals combined to spine-tingling effect, elevating the songs far beyond their studio counterparts. Wolf Alice are a band that truly takes their music to the next level on stage. If you get the chance to see them live, don’t hesitate.

Camera Setup: Fujifilm X-Pro2
Lens: 16–55mm f/2.8
Shooting the gig with the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and 16–55mm f/2.8 lens, I initially opted for high-speed shooting before switching back to single-shot mode, realizing the venue didn’t demand that level of burst performance. Using spot metering, the camera’s auto white balance proved remarkably accurate despite the constantly changing stage lighting, while autofocus remained consistently reliable throughout the set.
This post features just a small selection of images from the night, with more to be showcased during my hands-on presentation at the 2016 Photography Show.
